Let Sleeping Dogs Lie: How To Tell If Your Dog's Feet Are Asleep

If you suddenly notice that your dog is walking funny, limping, or favoring only some of his legs, it could be that your dog's foot has fallen asleep. Just like their human counterparts, dogs can lose circulation in one or more of their legs as a result of laying too long in a particular position. The risk of poor circulation can increase for older dogs or dogs that don't eat a very balanced, nutritious diet.

Some things to know about this funny, though sometimes frightening, condition include the following.

Your pet appears injured. When your dog loses circulation in a leg or limb, it is typically because they slept on it. Your dog may limp or favor the other limbs, which makes it look like your pet has suffered an injury. If you are certain that your dog has not recently been injured, it is likely that their leg has simply 'gone to sleep' and will be just fine.

It isn't painful. Think of how it feels when your arm or leg 'goes to sleep.' It isn't particularly comfortable, but your dog should not be in pain either. If your dog is whimpering, crying, or exhibiting pain-related behaviors (such as excessive licking or lack of appetite), take your pet to a vet like Miramonte Veterinary Hospital for assessment as soon as possible.

Try to prevent injuries. Don't let your dog up on a bed, chair, or other high-surface when they don't have full-use of their limbs. Try to keep them on a flat, level surface (the floor) so that they won't risk further injury jumping or falling from furniture. It would be easy for a dog to twist, sprain, or even fracture a leg when they are experiencing this condition.

Encourage use of the limb. Keep an eye on your pet and support them as they limp around. While you want to encourage that they use the limb, you don't want them to become injured as a result. Give them space, but watch to ensure they are out of imminent danger.

It shouldn't last long. The circulation should restore in no time, particularly if you are able to get your dog moving around a bit. However, if it persists, it could be a more serious injury. Contact your veterinary provider immediately.

Use these tips if you notice that your pet is walking a little funny or favoring only certain legs.
